Would you like to obtain a passport but don’t know how or where to begin the process? Below are the details on the process and requirements:
The passport is an official identification document used to travel and to show proof of identity and nationality of a person.
The office that processes passports is the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE), a department of the government that has delegations and offices in every state of the Mexican Republic. Everyone who is applying for a passport must do so with the department’s closest jurisdiction to them and set an appointment to obtain a passport. Take note that while a passport allows you to travel outside of Mexico, it is not a permit to enter the United States, for which you would require a visa in addition to the passport.
The first step in applying for a passport is to schedule an appointment with the SRE, you can go to this link: here and select “haz tu cita” to make an appointment. Here you will be able to enter your pre-registration personal details. Additionally, you can schedule an appointment by telephone at no cost using the phone number 800 8010 773. Whether you are scheduling the appointment via internet or telephone, it is important to have on hand your birth certificate, CURP, electoral credential, and an e-mail address because it will be necessary to provide personal information from these documents.
Reminder:
If you do the process online, at the end of the pre-registration you will be able to download your appointment confirmation and a help sheet, which is used to make the payment for your passport rights. You can make the payment in one of the authorized banks. It is always recommended to pay for the passport fee before the appointment.

If you decide to make your appointment by telephone, in addition to having the documents mentioned above, have paper and pencil handy to take notes on the details of your appointment. Remember to check the email you provide since the SRE will use this email to send you the help sheet for the payment of the passport rights and the appointment confirmation.
On the day of the appointment, it is important to have the following documents ready: birth certificate (recent), voter credential, CURP, the receipt showing payment of passport rights, printed appointment confirmation, passport-size photos and arrive early to the scheduled appointment time at the delegation. If you are late for your appointment, you will have to schedule a new appointment.
During the appointment, you have to pay attention to the instructions of the SRE staff, who will review your documents, take your fingerprints, read your Iris and after a waiting period, they will give you your passport. Sounds easy enough!
If you are trying to obtain a passport do not be misled or deceived and keep the following in mind:
· It is a personal and individual process
· Without an appointment, there is no passport
· The validity of the passport for those over 18 years of age is 3, 6, and 10 years and the cost of the right to passport depends on the validity period of it.
· The payment for the right to passport has to be made to the Ministry of Foreign Relations, with a reference number from authorized banks, which comes on the help sheet that the SRE will send you by email.
