Company seeks exemption from law protecting domestic workers
A company wants obtain an exemption from the legislation protecting domestic workers, or au pairs, from labor abuse in the state of Massachusetts.
Under the Domestic Worker's Bill of Rights, employers must provide fair working conditions. Some examples of these requirements are:
Grant holidays
Provide reasonable resting times
Allow contact with relatives and acquaintances
The company Cultural Care Au Pair argues that households would be financially unable to meet all the requirements.
There are about 1,200 au pairs registered under the J-1 program in Massachusetts and more than 16,000 in the United States.
