Thousands of people work every year in the United States for long periods with a valid Social Security Number and can qualify for benefits when they reach retirement age or complete certain requirements. We share the following information about benefits offered by the Social Security Administration.

Know the types of benefits that you could qualify for:

Retirement: In general, you can qualify to receive monthly retirement benefits starting at 62 years old if you worked and paid Social Security taxes for 10 years or longer in the United States. In the majority of cases, you can request retirement benefits even if you are still working. The payments are calculated based on your lifetime earnings, you can apply between the ages of 62 and 70. To apply for retirement benefits, call +1 800-772-1213.

Disability: The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or “Disability” provides monthly payments to people with a disability that prevents or limits their ability to work for a year or longer, or that results in death. (For example: blindness and sufficient work history). The payments are based on your work history prior to your disability. You can apply for disability benefits by calling the number +1 800-772-1213.

Survivors: Survivor benefits provide monthly payments to family members such as kids, parents, and spouses of those who worked and paid Social Security taxes before passing away.

Family: Family benefits provide monthly payments to certain family members of the person who had the right to retirement or disability benefits. Recognized beneficiaries are “spouses and children.”

Supplemental Security Income (SSI): People with disabilities or elderly adults, a disability such as blindness or if a person is 65 years or older, who have little or no income or resources can receive monthly payments through SSI. The monthly payment depends on a person’s income, their living situation, their property, and other factors. Verify your right to receive Social Security benefits.

After submitting an application, you’ll receive an email informing you that your benefits were approved or if you need to provide additional information. If your application is approved, your first payment will generally arrive a month after the one you chose. You can verify the status of your application. You have four opportunities to appeal the decision if you disagree with the outcome of your social security benefits application: 1) Request a reconsideration, 2) request a hearing with a judge, review the hearing’s decision, 3) request a revision, and 4) file a U.S. district court action.
