Farmworkers to receive overtime in California
On September 12, Governor Jerry Brown signed law AB 1066 approving overtime pay for farmworkers in the state of California.
This change will happen in increments starting in 2019 until reaching overtime pay levels of workers in other industries, which equals time-and-a-half after eight hours in a day or 40 hours in a week.
Most companies will have to adhere to these conditions by 2022, with the exception of farms with 25 employees or less, which will have to fulfill this requirement completely starting in 2015.
Currently, farm workers get overtime pay only if they work longer than 10 hours a day or 60 hours a week.
California became the first state to have an overtime pay requirement for farm workers thanks to groups including United Farm Workers, California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation, Líderes Campesinas and other allies.
