This May 1, a Call for Migrant Worker Health and Safety

Today, on May First, we celebrate International Workers’ Day. On social media, farmworker women and their allies are calling on the U.S. government to improve health and safety protections.

Farmworkers like Patty risk their lives every day to maintain their families and to feed ours. In the following message, she expresses her concern for the lack of workplace protections during the COVID-19 crisis: https://youtu.be/EtsYTRdCOOs

Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, who is organizing this social media “storm,” invites the public to join in support of farmworkers and other industries where migrant workers labor with few or nonexistent protections.  The messages are directed toward government agencies, among them, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (@OSHA_DOL), the Secretary of Labor, Eugene Scalia (@SecGeneScalia), among others, using hashtags like #OSHAdoYourJob or #OSHAhazTuTrabajo.

The messages are being shared on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to make noise about these working conditions. Some of the messages also express solidarity with migrant workers employed in poultry and meatpacking plants, where strong COVID-19 outbreaks have been reported this week.

Join this campaign today to demand greater protections for migrant workers! Share your experience and follow the conversation on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram with the hashtags #OSHADoYourJob and #OSHAhazTuTrabajo.
