This employer said they were paying me under the table which I assumed was legal as a farm worker but later learned it was not legal and ended up having many tax issues. After two and a half years working for them they said that I was in fact an independent contractor which made my final wage well below the federal minimum. I was required to use my own vehicles for many farm jobs and not compensated for the mileage or wear and damage to them. The jobs were mostly very enjoyable although i was required to pay other people to help me get them completed on time (being seasonal farm jobs well beyond my own means) as well as purchase equipment etc. and not reimbursed for 30 days later and sometimes much later or never. Most payments came late and were challenged. I am still owed for receipts that were not accepted. There were many work safety hazards that were not made aware - I found out the hazard during or after the job was completed. The employer was participating in bad food safety practices and when I made them aware threatened me with loss of work etc. I would recommend not working for this employer- it seems very pleasing to begin and will end poorly in my opinion. I have seen many employees leave upset (as well as local self contractors) and in fact I was the longest standing employee of the employer (to my understanding) until my job ended badly, also.
