Maribel and Reyna, two crawfish workers, were fired by their employer for seeking medical treatment after they became infected with COVID-19 at their workplace in Louisiana.

With CDM’s support, they filed a whistleblower complaint with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) arguing that their employer retaliated against them for standing up for their right to health and safety.

Executive order on the protection of the health and safety of workers

President Joe Biden signed an executive order on January 21, 2021, which directs the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to issue guidance for employers on protecting workers against COVID-19. 

In the order, Biden wrote that "ensuring the health and safety of working people is a national priority and a moral imperative", and that: "Health workers and other essential working people, many of whom are people of color and immigrants have risked their lives ”during the pandemic.

Agricultural Business Groups Move to Stop COVID-19 Worker Protections in California

At the end of November, California’s Occupational Health and Safety Administration (Cal-OSHA) and the Occupational Safety & Health Standards Board (OSHSB) put into place new safety measures for agricultural workers. Now business groups are suing to stop the implementation of these new rules.
